ECOTAN

Raw leather which is a by-product of food industry is prone to breaking down/decomposing quickly. To counter this, people have processed raw leather with natural molecules (vegetal tannins) obtained from plants to protect raw leather against microbial attacks. While biomolecules lead to deterioration regardless of being vegetable or animal protein, vegetal tanning substances prevent such deterioration. This ensures that the leather is more long-lasting. This combination of animal hide and vegetal tanning materials leads to a result unlike any other material: leather. In a way, we suspend the natural cycle of leather and make it available for our own use.

With EcoTan, we take leather back to nature and complete the sustainability cycle.

It is possible to use leather produced with EcoTan tanning method as organic fertiliser after a brief hydrolysis application. Following its transformation into organic fertiliser, EcoTan leather becomes a part of an eternal cycle which merges with nature perfectly. Finished leather should be treated more gently in the manufacturing of the final product which differentiates it from classical leather production. Steam, heat and pressure applied to leather in the manufacturing of the final product need to be adjusted. However, these are acceptable adjustments taking into account the environmental benefits.
